Formed in April 2013, EC-OG is an employee-owned independent Subsea Engineering services provider. Vortex Hydro Energy, an energy startup founded by a Michigan Engineering researcher, recently tested the first commercial-scale prototype of its VIVACE device in the St. Clair River in Michigan. Michael Bernitsas, the Mortimer E Cooley Collegiate Professor of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering at the University of Michigan, founded the company in 2004 with the goal of building a device that could harness vortex-induced vibrations to produce electricity. VIVACE does just that, and has the ability to generate electric power from currents much slower than those required by today’s hydroelectric generators, which could revolutionize the industry and open the door to power generation from ocean and river currents around the globe. An Australian company has been working on a system that uses underwater buoys to convert sea waves into zero-emission energy and desalinated water. Australian firm Carnegie Wave Energy has been developing a system called CETO, which aims to utilise sea waves to generate power. Steel-made buoys that can currently generate 240 kilowatts are the main part of the system. At the Australian naval base HMAS Stirling, three buoys are placed 11 kilometres apart. The buoys are less susceptible to extreme weather damage, while underwater waves are sufficient to generate power.
